🎚️ Understanding Homeopathic Potencies: How They Work & Why They Matter

In homeopathy, two people may receive the same remedy yet in completely different potencies and both can be the perfect prescription. That’s because potency isn’t about “strength” in the chemical sense; it's about how deeply and how gently the remedy communicates with the body.
Potency is a language and once you understand it, everything in homeopathy begins to make sense.
What are Potencies, really?
A potency describes how many times a substance has been diluted and succussed (shaken with impact).
This process, called potentisation, transforms the remedy from a physical preparation into an energetic one.
The more a substance is potentised, the more it speaks to the body's force rather than its biochemistry. ⚗️
It’s not about quantity, it’s about resonance.
The Centesimal Scale (C Potencies): 12C, 30C, 200C
This is the most commonly used scale.
Here’s how they generally behave:
12C – Gentle, Physical, Grounding
Useful for surface-level, more physical symptoms:
Minor aches
Simple digestive upset
Early colds
It can also be used for Chronic conditions.
30C – The Everyday Potency
A wonderful middle ground. Often used for:
Emotional upsets
Acute infections
Children’s issues
Menstrual pains
It works on both body and emotions.
200C – Deep Acting & Energetic
Used in situations with:
Strong emotional intensity
Fever
Shock, grief, fear
More persistent complaints
Nervous system imbalance
It speaks to the deeper energetic patterns of the body.
Higher Potencies: 1M, 10M, 50M
These are for more experienced practitioners to use.
They can be transformative when used well, especially for:
Long-standing emotional patterns
Trauma
Chronic illness
Strong personality imprints
They are not “stronger” but more penetrating, acting at the deepest layers of the vital force.
X or D Potencies (Decimal): Subtle, Gentle, Often Physical
6X or 12X potencies often support the physiology more directly.
Common uses:
Nutritional-style remedies (Ferrum phos, Mag phos)
Tissue salts
Rebuilding resilience
Think of them as whisper-level support for the body.
LM Potencies: The Most Flexible & Gentle
LMs (or Q potencies) are made differently and act in a subtle, continuous way.
They are useful for:
Chronic conditions
Emotional work
Sensitive individuals
Babies, children, pregnant people
They can be taken daily in tiny amounts, creating a stable and steady progression.
Many modern homeopaths (myself included) love them for their refined, gentle action.
So how do we choose a Potency?
It’s never random, we look at:
1. Sensitivity of the person
Highly sensitive → lower or LM
Robust & reactive → higher potency
2. Depth of the issue
Surface-level → low
Emotional/long-standing → medium or high
3. Acuteness
Sudden intense symptoms → 200C or higher
Mild acute → 30C
4. Frequency rather than strength
A lower potency taken more often can act more steadily than a high potency taken once.
This is where the individualised nature of homeopathy shines: the potency is chosen for the person, not the condition.
How Often Should You Repeat a Dose?
As a general principle: Repeat only when the effect begins to fade.
Remedies stimulate the system, they do not need constant repetition.
For LM potencies, repetition is more regular but gentler.
Why Potency Matters
Potency determines:
How deeply the remedy acts
How long it lasts
How gently the system responds
A beautifully chosen potency can feel like the body suddenly remembering its own rhythm.
You feel more yourself, not stimulated, not suppressed, simply aligned.
